IPOH: The Perak customs department seized 28 luxury vehicles with unpaid duties of RM10.4 million during the first two months of the year, state director Abdul Ghafar Mohamad said.
He added that the enforcement division raided 12 locations across Perak and Selangor, seizing the vehicles, including Porsche, Lamborghini and Mercedes-Benz marques, Bernama reported.
“Perak customs has also detained 11 people in their 40s to 50s, suspected to be vehicle owners and company owners, to assist in the investigations.
“Offences included breaching the terms of duty and tax exemption facilities; keeping luxury vehicles in unlicensed areas; and possessing vehicle numbers on the peninsula for more than 90 days after registration in Langkawi,” he said at a press conference here today.
Ghafar said the customs department was still investigating whether those responsible had import permits.
“Smuggling is not only detrimental to the country in terms of lost revenue, but also poses a threat to national security and the well-being of the people,” he said. - FMT
