Planned tour with PN for people's sake, not joining coalition – Syed Saddiq

Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said his participation in a roadshow being organised by Perikatan Nasional does not mean he will support the opposition coalition.

Instead, he said he decided to join the tour as it involves the people’s issues, and will be joined by various quarters including civil societies.

"The suggestion is that we use a neutral platform where we can galvanise the energies of people from all walks of life.

"Regardless of whether from political parties or outside of politics so that in the end (the tour) is not about Muda, not about PN, not about Syed Saddiq or Muhyiddin (Yassin) but it is about the plight of the people that must be prioritised," he said at a press conference at Parliament today.

Previously, Muhyiddin said the PN roadshow series scheduled to begin after Ramadan is aimed at explaining to the people PN's position and role, and that Syed Saddiq (above) will be partaking in the tour.

However, Muda denied discussing participation in the roadshow, with party secretary-general Amir Abdul Hadi stressing that Syed Saddiq, as a Muda member, must abide by the party’s decision.

Commenting on this, Syed Saddiq said the roadshow proposal will be presented to Muda's leadership.

The party leadership had contacted him to seek an explanation about Muhyiddin's statement.

"I will summarise it here, the cooperation needs to be driven by my party (Muda). However, it does not mean that it (the roadshow) will be led by Muda.

"I need to present it to the party to get permission because I am still a party member. I am an ordinary member, not the president.

"I will discuss this matter with the leadership and the party leadership has also contacted me to ask for further explanation about what happened and I will oblige," he said.

‘Never discussed with party’

In a statement following Syed Saddiq’s presser, Muda acting president Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz said the party was neither informed nor had agreed to join the roadshow with PN.

She also stressed that Muda will remain as a third force as she justified the reason why the youth-centric party has yet to join either the coalition government or PN.

"Regarding the PN tour - this was never discussed within Muda's central executive committee or in any official meeting with PN. Any form of cooperation was also not discussed, let alone agreed upon.

"Muda has only established a joint commitment with PSM, specifically to raise issues concerning the people across religions, races and skin colours. For me, that is all that remains," she said in a statement.

Syed Saddiq had resigned as Muda president after being convicted in a corruption case last November. The case is under appeal.

Prior to forming Muda, the Muar MP was the Bersatu Youth chief until Muhyiddin led the party out of Pakatan Harapan in the 2020 change of government.
