Independent preacher Muhammad Zamri Vinoth Kalimuthu has challenged Jelutong MP RSN Rayer to prove the claim that he insulted the Hindu people.
“Rayer claimed in Parliament yesterday that Zamri Vinoth has insulted (the Hindus).
“So I challenge him to prove where and how I had done so,” Zamri (above, left) told Malaysiakini when contacted.
He was responding to the call by Rayer and other Indian lawmakers in Parliament earlier today, for the Home Ministry to act against him for allegedly insulting Hindus in the country.
According to Rayer, this was over a series of TikTok videos posted by Zamri, in which he “explained” about the Shiva Lingam.
The Shiva Lingam is a votary object that symbolises the Hindu god Shiva and is revered as an emblem of generative power.
Also present at the press conference were Klang MP V Ganabatirau, Segamat MP R Yuneswaran, Batu MP P Prabakaran, and senators C Sivarraajh and R Arunasalam.
‘Where’s the insult?’
Zamri said he merely spoke about the Shiva Lingam when explaining the claim by some Hindus that the object can be found inside the Ka’abah.
“This matter cropped up several years ago when several Hindus made a video claiming that there’s a Shiva Lingam inside the Ka’abah and said that Muslims were also praying to the object.
“I then made a video explaining what is actually inside the Ka’abah. When talking about the matter, Muslims of course do not know what a Shiva Lingam is, so I explained it,” said Zamri.
“I explained it not from my extent of knowledge, but according to the Sanskrit dictionary and also the Shiva Puranam (one of 18 major texts of the Purana genre of Sanskrit texts in Hinduism).
“So in this case, where I explained the meaning (of Shiva Lingam), where is the insult?” questioned Zamri.
Instead of taking him to task, Rayer and his colleagues should instead question the Hindus who claim that there’s a Shiva Lingam inside the Ka’abah, he said.
“Is responding to an allegation against Islam considered triggering a controversy?
“Rayer should look for the Hindu who made the claim, whereas I merely responded by explaining the issue.”
Claims of the Shiva Lingam being in the Ka'abah have been making the rounds on social media for years.
Most recently a video made by a Malaysian was posted on TikTok, attracting backlash from Muslims.
The video on TikTok has since been deleted.
This is not Zamri’s first brush with Hinduism. The ardent disciple of equally controversial Indian-born preacher Zakir Naik has had hundreds of police reports lodged against him, and a lawsuit filed, for allegedly belittling Hinduism. - Mkini
