The United for the Rights of Malaysian Party (Urimai), established by former Penang deputy chief minister P Ramasamy, will bat for the opposition in the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election.
This was announced by Satees Muniandy, the secretary of the party’s interim leadership council, in a statement today.
He said the decision was taken following a meeting by the council yesterday.
“The leadership council takes note of the importance of the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election under the current political scenario.
“The council takes note of the view of the Selangor state leadership that the coming by-election will provide an opportunity for Urimai to gauge its political standing in the constituency, which has 18 percent Indian voters,” the former Bagan Dalam assemblyperson said.
‘United front to defeat Harapan-BN’
Thus, Satees said a united front among the opposition would be needed to oppose the “ineffective” Pakatan Harapan-BN-led government.
“Urimai urges the opposition parties to consolidate their strength and resources to field a winnable candidate to defeat the Harapan-BN coalition in the KKB by-election.
“The leadership council mandates party chairperson Ramasamy to engage the opposition parties to consolidate the strength of the opposition bloc to face the KKB by-election.
“Urimai is committed to hit the campaign trail to defeat the forces of the Harapan-BN coalition in the coming by-election,” Satees said.
He added that the party’s election committee for the by-election will be headed by its deputy chairperson David Marshel.
“This committee will plan, strategise and mobilise voters to support the opposition candidate.”
The KKB state seat became vacant following the passing of its incumbent Lee Kee Hiong from cancer on March 21. The DAP lawmaker was 58.
BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had said that the coalition will not seek to contest the seat, and will respect whoever is chosen by the government to contest the seat. - Mkini
