Selangor PAS chief urges calm over socks row, says harmony must be protected

Following an attempted arson at a KK Mart branch, PAS called for calm and stressed that Malaysia’s harmony must be prioritised and protected.

According to Malay Mail, Selangor PAS chief Ab Halim Tamuri said although he understands how important the socks fiasco is for Malaysian Muslims, it is not necessary to jeopardise the country’s multiracial identity.

“The socks issue should be looked at through a wider scope. In PAS, we don’t just look at the Allah issue, but how to respect other religions as well. In a country that lives in harmony, you have to be careful when talking about sensitive issues.

“In Islam, we are not allowed to insult other people’s religion. That is why we deal with it, we discuss it with knowledge and also judicial process,” he was quoted as saying.

Halim also urged politicians to refrain from fanning the controversy for political reasons.

The police are currently investigating the attempted firebombing of a KK Mart outlet in Bidor, Perak in the early hours this morning and investigators reportedly have CCTV footage of the suspect.

Meanwhile, DAP lawmaker Kelvin Yii said that politicians fanning the flames of division are indirectly responsible for the attempted arson at the convenience store.

While Yii didn’t name anyone, he was likely referring to Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, the leading proponent for a boycott campaign against KK Mart.

Akmal has also condemned the attempted arson, labeling the act as extreme but stressed that the boycott must continue in a “calm” manner.

KK Mart has been at the centre of controversy after socks bearing the word Allah were found at three of its outlets.

KK Mart and its former supplier had apologised and claimed the socks were an oversight.

The apology, as well as calls for calm, have failed to deter Akmal from pressing for action to be taken against KK Mart.

Earlier today, KK Mart, its former supplier Xin Jian Chang Sdn Bhd, and directors for both companies were charged with deliberately causing religious hurt. - Mkini
