Umno Youth calls for detailed review of vernacular education system

With rising polarisation in the country, Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh called for the government to conduct a detailed evaluation of the vernacular education system.

As such, Akmal called on the government to relook into the vernacular schools’ education ecosystem by inculcating nationalistic aspects, while strengthening its students' command of the Malay language.

“At the same time, we urge the government to improve the national education system and come up with measures to attract students from all races.

“The government should also consider interim measures such as medium and long-term road map towards an integrated education model, which is based on common values and sense of belonging among the multiracial nation, without setting aside the rights of races in Malaysia to preserve the heritage of their respective mother tongues,” he said in a statement today.

On Wednesday (March 6), Akmal suggested for Putrajaya to refine the schooling system.

“Perhaps, the time has come for a single-stream education system to be implemented,” he posted on Facebook.

His comments come despite the Federal Court’s dismissal of two NGOs’ bid for leave to appeal to nullify the validity of vernacular schools in the country.

On Feb 20, the apex court denied leave appeal for the Islamic Education Development Council (Mappim) and the Confederation of Malaysian Writers Association (Gapena).

The groups failed in their legal challenge at both the High Court and Court of Appeal levels over the constitutionality of 1,302 Mandarin schools and 527 Tamil schools nationwide.

National dialogue space

Meanwhile, Akmal today further suggested the revival of a national dialogue space for the nation to explore new visions towards the integration of national education.

He also expressed concerns about the latest polemic developments that have “fuelled the raging division”.

“Everything that happened is a reflection of after almost 70 years of independence, there is still a gap in values and a separation of understanding among the multiracial Malaysians.

“Umno Youth believes that the increasingly impoverished tension is rooted in the system of separation and isolation that is implemented starting at the most basic level of the people’s lives, which is from schools.

“The time has come for Malaysia to end the separation and isolation,” he said. - Mkini
