Wan Saiful urged to apologise over inaccurate 'ringgit-US$' post

Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng has urged Bersatu supreme council member Wan Saiful Wan Jan to retract his statement over an erroneous RM-to-US$ exchange rate published by Google yesterday.

Lim also urged the Tasek Gelugor MP to issue a public apology on the matter.

“The seriousness of his action cannot be overstated; it has become evident to the public that both he and his political party have engaged in deceitful tactics with the malicious intent of undermining the nation’s economy,” claimed Lim.

“It is imperative that Wan Saiful be held accountable for his actions.“The gravity of the matter necessitates swift and decisive consequences to uphold the integrity of our democratic principles and restore trust among the populace,” said the DAP lawmaker.

Yesterday, Wan Saiful posted a sarcastic remark on Facebook, “Among signs of a strengthening ringgit. What? #salam5ringgit”.

The post was accompanied by an image of a Google-generated exchange rate which inaccurately showed that US$1 was equal to RM4.98.

Bank Negara Malaysia in a statement earlier today clarified that the ringgit was quoted at 4.7015 against the US dollar at 9am and 4.7045 at 5pm yesterday.

Responding to BNM, Wan Saiful did not apologise or remove his initial post, but instead shared the central bank’s statement with a remark, "Congratulations for the swift explanation”.

The central bank also pointed out that this was the second incident in which Google published inaccurate US$-to-ringgit exchange rate data this year. - Mkini
