Chemical reaction caused fire at Port Dickson storage facility

The fire at the Kualiti Alam Waste Management Centre was caused by a chemical reaction within the logistics zone (shed A) designated for scheduled chemical waste storage at Cenviro Sdn Bhd, located in Ladang Tanah Merah, A3 Division, Bukit Pelanduk, Port Dickson.

Seremban Entrepreneurship, Human Resources, Climate Change, Cooperatives, and Consumerism Committee chairperson S Veerapan, estimated that the company suffered losses of about RM8 million due to the fire yesterday evening.

“I was informed that the incident occurred in the scheduled waste storage area, and the fire was triggered by a chemical reaction involving approximately 160kg of chloride chemicals kept there.

“Currently, the authorities are monitoring air and water conditions, and the public need not worry as everything is under control,” he told reporters today, noting that this was the third fire at the centre, after 2015 and 2019.

Meanwhile, Cenviro Group managing director Johari Jalil said that all 86 workers at the factory were safe.

He clarified that the fire, which started in a remote storage area, was brought under control by the Negeri Sembilan Fire and Rescue Department and the Cenviro Hazmat and Firefighting team at around 8.20pm.

“The fire only affected a portion of our warehouse capacity and did not impact the daily operations of our waste management centre,” he added.

Upon detecting the fire, the Cenviro Emergency Response Team promptly initiated emergency procedures, with an additional 66 personnel from four Negeri Sembilan Fire and Rescue stations also dispatched to the site, he added.

Johari noted that the factory’s Health, Safety, Security, and Environment team continues to monitor air quality and gas readings on-site and in the surrounding areas.

Yesterday, it was reported that the Cenviro Sdn Bhd factory, spanning 100x100 square feet in the Tanah Merah Estate A3 Division, Bukit Pelanduk, Port Dickson, was destroyed in the fire.
