DAP has requested Meta to shut down a fake account posing as its candidate for Kuala Kubu Baharu, Pang Sock Tao, which certain parties allegedly created.
DAP national publicity secretary Teo Nie Ching believes more fake accounts impersonating party candidates or leaders will crop up to spread disinformation and hate speech during the upcoming by-election.
“Pang’s candidacy was announced last night. Today, someone used her photos to create a fake account on Facebook.
“For the information of all Malaysians, (this is) Pang’s official page, which was created in February 2018, and has 33,000 followers,” Teo posted on Facebook.
The deputy communication minister said with the help of artificial intelligence (AI), generating content has become easy.
“Be an informed netizen. Check your facts from reliable sources. Don’t be influenced by this misinformation easily.
“I also want to urge those not aligned with us to compete in a healthy way. Engage, not enrage; debate not hate,” she added.
Yesterday, Pang, who is Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming’s press secretary, was announced as the coalition government’s candidate for the Kuala Kubu Baru by-election.
Nomination day is this Saturday while voters in the state constituency will head to the polls on May 11 and early voting is on May 7.
The by-election was triggered after the state seat fell vacant following the death of Lee Kee Hiong, 58, due to cancer on March 21.
