Decide your position in coalition govt, Lokman tells MCA

Umno supreme council member Lokman Noor Adam has urged MCA to make a decision on its position in the coalition government.

This was after the BN component party decided to sit out of the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election on May 11.

“When we (BN) decide to be in a team, we must show that we are a team player.

“If they (MCA) want to be treated fairly, they must also contribute to strengthening the unity government.

“I believe MCA has to make a decision on whether they want to continue being a part of the unity government or be wherever else they want to be,” Lokman (above) told reporters after attending the government’s candidate unveiling ceremony at Taman Gamelan in Kuala Kubu Baharu, last night.

MCA president Wee Ka Siong recently questioned the need for his party to assist DAP in the by-election as the latter often insulted them.

Wee cited DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke calling MCA a taukeh party” that only caters for the rich and people with positions as one of the insults.

Elaborating, Lokman said that MCA should not get offended by criticisms thrown towards the party.

“We understand if they feel slighted but in politics, one should not be so easily offended.

“In politics, we often criticise others, so we must be willing to accept criticisms. Don’t always think about yourself,” he added.

Previously, BN deputy chairperson Mohamad Hasan said that BN component parties are required to help the government candidate in the by-election.

MIC to support govt candidate

MIC has instructed its machinery to campaign in Kuala Kubu Baharu to ensure the government candidate’s victory, putting to rest speculations that the BN component party may also sit out of the by-election.

According to its president SA Vigneswaran, the decision was taken in the interest of the Indian community in the constituency.

“I want all MIC members from Kuala Kubu Baharu to go down to the ground with DAP and PKR to campaign for the government candidate,” he told reporters after launching the party’s operations centre in the constituency yesterday.

Also present were Selangor exco members V Papparaidu and Ng Sze Han as well as MIC deputy president M Saravanan.

Saravanan denied claims that MIC has been inconsistent in its support for the coalition government.

“Our stand has been consistent since we supported Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in establishing the unity government, after the 15th general election.

“Then, we promised the Yang di-Pertuan Agong that we would support Anwar until the end of his term. We will not support anyone else.

“So it’s not wrong if MIC supports the Harapan candidate in this by-election,” he said in a speech at the launch.

Klang MP V Ganabatirau also urged the 7,500 Indian voters in the constituency to avoid being “poisoned” by parties calling them to boycott the by-election.

Minister’s aide chosen to content

Last night, Pang Sock Tao, an aide to Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, was announced as the coalition government’s candidate for the by-election.

The by-election is being held following the death of Lee Kee Hiong, 58, on March 21 due to cancer.

The Election Commission has set May 11 as the polling day and this Saturday as the nomination day.

The by-election is the seventh since the 15th general election after the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary seat in August, the Pulai parliamentary seat and Simpang Jeram state seat (September), Pelangai state seat (October), the Jepak state seat (November), and Kemaman parliamentary seat (December). - Mkini
