Former inspector-general of police Hanif Omar has passed away aged 85.
Berita Harian reported that Hanif’s son Abdul Rahmat Omar confirmed his passing with a post on social media at 2.15am today.
The late Hanif served as the fourth inspector-general of police from June 1974 to January 1994.
He was born in Teluk Intan, Perak on Jan 16, 1939.
Hanif was the longest-serving IGP in Malaysia and presided over the rescue operations in the 1975 AIA hostage crisis in 1975.
He was also IGP during Ops Lalang which was a major crackdown in late 1987 that involved the arrest of activists, opposition politicians and intellectuals detained without trial under the Internal Security Act. - Mkini
