Ignore negative voices in Kuala Kubu Baharu, says Yeoh

DAP vehemently rejects any attempt by certain parties to launch a campaign to boycott Pakatan Harapan in the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election on May 11.

The party’s assistant publicity secretary, Hannah Yeoh, said a boycott would be unproductive and harmful to the country.

“We have to ignore negative voices like this. If you stay at home and do not vote, this is not a productive action and is not good for the country.

“It’s easy to talk but not to do work, it’s better for us to work,” she told reporters after inaugurating the Jom Gerak programme organised by Feminine Magazine at Taman Tasik Menjalara, Segambut, today.

Yeoh was commenting on reports that several quarters comprising former ministers, former Harapan leaders and allies, as well as NGO representatives are holding meetings with local leaders and the Indian community’s representatives urging for a boycott of the May 11 by-election.

Selangor executive councillor V Papparaidu also confirmed the existence of an attempt by certain parties to mobilise a campaign to boycott Harapan in the by-election.

This is after an NGO that once collaborated with Harapan openly asked Indian voters to spoil their votes in the upcoming polls.

Malaysian Peaceful Meeting Organisation president A Rajaretinam said the action was to send a message of their dissatisfaction to the central government, especially DAP.

‘Late rep worked hard for KKB’

Commenting further, Yeoh, who is also youth and sports minister, said the Kuala Kubu Baharu state seat had been well looked after for three terms by its former assemblyperson Lee Kee Hiong.

“I believe her service was very good for the voters of Kuala Kubu Baharu and that is why they continued to elect her and this is a tribute to her legacy because she took good care of Kuala Kubu Baharu.

“So, all the voices telling people to boycott that, boycott this, boycott don’t vote is a negative movement because the right to vote is the basic right of all Malaysians to make decisions for them,” he said.

On April 14, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said his government had never neglected the Indian community.

While mentioning several programmes that were being drawn up, Anwar said it was unfair for certain parties to accuse him of not making any efforts to solve the problems of the Indian community.

“If I don’t do anything for the Indian community, you have the right to ‘stab’ me,” he said.

The Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election will be held on May 11 following the death of Lee on March 21.

Nomination of candidates for the by-election will be held on April 27, while early voting is set for May 7.

The seat comprises 18 percent Indian voters. Malay voters make up 46 percent, Chinese (31 percent), followed by others (five percent). - Mkini
