Perikatan Nasional is poised to field a candidate from Bersatu for next month’s Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election instead of Gerakan, which wanted to contest the seat again.
According to PN sources, the coalition will be naming Hulu Selangor Bersatu division acting chief Azhari Saut as the candidate.
The sources claimed the decision was made to boost Malay and Indian support for the coalition.
Kuala Kubu Baharu is a mixed constituency, with Malay voters accounting for 46 percent, Chinese voters 30 percent, Indian voters 18 percent, and others six percent.
Last week, Gerakan president Dominic Lau said his party would contest in the polls.
It was also speculated that Gerakan intended to field Muniraa Abu Bakar, who was defeated in the contest for the Bukit Lanjan seat by a Pakatan Harapan candidate in last year’s state election.
As for Kuala Kubu Baharu, Gerakan’s Henry Teoh lost to the late incumbent Lee Kee Hiong.
The by-election, scheduled for May 11, was called following the death of Lee, who held the seat since 2013, last month.
Earlier, Malaysiakini reported that Harapan is expected to name an aide to Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming as the DAP candidate.
According to a Harapan source, Pang Sock Tao, 31, will be officially announced as the candidate tonight.
Malaysiakini has contacted Lau for comment. - Mkini
