PETALING JAYA: The meteorological department (MetMalaysia) has issued a level two heatwave alert for the Pokok Sena district in Kedah.

According to the weather update on its X page, the area recorded an orange level heatwave, as of 4.30pm today.

The orange level alert refers to daily maximum temperatures of 37°C to 40°C for at least three consecutive days.

Meanwhile, a level one hot weather alert was recorded in Timur Laut in Penang; Gua Musang in Kelantan; Hulu Perak, Kuala Kangsar and Kinta in Perak; several other areas of Kedah; and the whole of Perlis.

The same level was also recorded in Raub, Pahang; Limbang in Sarawak; and Beaufort, Tenom and Tuaran in Sabah.

A level one hot weather status is issued when temperatures are between 35°C and 37°C for three consecutive days.

MetMalaysia director-general Helmi Abdullah had said the hot and dry weather in most areas across the country is expected to gradually ease by mid-April.

Helmi said this follows the beginning of the monsoon transition phase, expected to start from March 29 and continue until May, marking the end of the northeast monsoon, which began on Nov 11 last year. - FMT
