MCMC investigating Aliff Syukri’s Hari Raya video

MCMC said the video clip, which shows a group of men dancing with Aliff while singing a Hari Raya song, might have violated provisions under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating cosmetics entrepreneur Aliff Syukri Kamarzaman’s “potentially inappropriate” video clip uploaded on social media.

Aliff uploaded a teaser of his latest Aidilfitri song, Love Raya, on his personal Instagram page on Sunday, but he had since deleted the video and issued an apology after facing criticism from social media users.

The video clip showed a group of men dancing with Aliff while singing a Hari Raya song.

“The video clip uploaded on his social media platform is seen as content that is potentially offensive and may violate provisions under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998,” said MCMC in a statement.

The communications regulator said this might include Section 233 of the Act, which criminalises online content that is “obscene, indecent, false, menacing or offensive in character with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass another person”.

“The investigation papers will be submitted to the attorney-general for further action once the probe has concluded,” it added.

If convicted, Aliff could face a maximum fine of RM50,000, imprisonment of up to one year, or both.

MCMC said Aliff had his statement recorded at the agency’s headquarters in Cyberjaya today, adding that it had also seized a SIM card and a mobile phone believed to have been used to upload the video.

Yesterday, communications minister Fahmi Fadzil asked MCMC to take appropriate action against Aliff after several complaints were received from social media users about the video clip.

Fahmi said content creators and social media influencers should produce content that was suitable for all age groups, adding that the government was concerned about content that could impact children negatively.

In a New Straits Times report today, Penang mufti Wan Salim Wan Noor expressed regret about the video clip, especially as it was released during Ramadan.

“They disrespected the holy month when they shamelessly danced in an outrageous way, like deranged drunkards,” he said.

“Such behaviour shows that they may not have been exposed to religious and moral education by their families.” - FMT
