Report: Alleged target of Israeli 'hitman' detained

The alleged assassination target of Shalom Avitan, an Israeli man recently arrested with six guns and 200 rounds of ammunition, is himself now in police custody.

Quoting sources, the New Straits Times reported that Eran Haya was among those detained by the police during operations in Kuala Lumpur and Johor on April 4 and 5.

It is understood that Haya, who is Turkish and American, also holds a Polish passport, which he used to enter Malaysia in February.

An embassy had reportedly engaged the police to locate and secure Haya following claims that Avitan came to Malaysia intending to assassinate the head of a rival crime family.

According to a Times of Israel report, Avitan was planning to eliminate Haya after Avitan’s home in Tel Aviv’s upscale Bavli neighbourhood was the target of several grenades tossed by Haya’s men in mid-March, around when Haya was said to have entered Malaysia.

On March 12, Malaysian police arrested Avitan at a hotel in Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, and seized six firearms and 200 bullets.

The weapons seized included Sig Sauer, Glock-27, and Smith & Wesson pistols.

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said the 36-year-old man was believed to have entered Malaysia through the United Arab Emirates on March 12 using a French passport.

The case is being investigated under Section 12 of the Passport Act and Section 7 of the Firearms Act.

Police have also detained several other suspects, including a local couple on suspicion of supplying firearms to Avitan. - Mkini
