65 pupils in Sungai Petani down with food poisoning

SUNGAI PETANI: Sixty-five pupils from SK Bandar Puteri Jaya near here suffered food poisoning after eating at the school’s canteen this morning.

The students were from Years 4, 5 and 6. Seven of them were taken to the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital, where they were reported to be in a stable condition.

The school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG) head Zubir Othman said the students suffered symptoms such as stomach ache, vomiting and diarrhoea.

“Those affected were said to have taken kuey teow soup during recess and started displaying symptoms of food poisoning at around noon,” he said when contacted today.

“The school authorities contacted the MERS 999 emergency line.”

The school prepared a special classroom for hospital staff and Kuala Muda district health officials to attend to affected pupils.

Zubir said the school’s canteen had been ordered to close for three days beginning today for further investigations. - FMT
