Muhyiddin and Hadi are still needed, insist party men

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu and PAS leaders have come together to defend their respective party presidents, Muhyiddin Yassin and Abdul Hadi Awang, amid a call for them to step down following Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) defeat in the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election.

Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said both leaders are still needed in their parties as they play a crucial role in maintaining unity within PN, where Muhyiddin is chairman while Hadi is his deputy.

“We can agree with political commentators who say there are weaknesses and shortcomings in terms of PN’s strategy and approach for the by-election, but this (calling for Muhyiddin and Hadi to resign) is not the way,” Wan Fayhsal said in a Facebook post.

“They (Muhyiddin and Hadi) should continue leading, while Bersatu and PAS should reassess our political approach and strategies according to our own framework.”

Wan Fayhsal, who is the PN Youth deputy chief, added that the by-election’s result does not accurately represent the coalition’s strength. He also accused PH of misusing government machinery and violating election regulations in the run-up to the polls.

Earlier today, former law minister Zaid Ibrahim said Muhyiddin and Hadi should resign following PN’s defeat in the by-election, which Pakatan Harapan’s Pang Sock Tao won with a 3,869-vote majority over PN’s Khairul Azhari Saut.

In a post on X, Zaid said Muhyiddin and Hadi, who are both 76, should step down in favour of younger leaders with fresh ideas.

Meanwhile, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man also defended the two coalition leaders and dismissed concerns about their age.

“Their ideas and leadership are still needed by PN,” he told FMT.

“If age was a factor, I would point out that almost all party leaders, including the prime minister, are old.

“These leaders serve as an inspiration for the party’s future generations.” -FMT
