Electrical fault leaves 69,000 consumers in Penang without water

The Penang Water Supply Corporation said it was working hard to restore full water supply to the affected consumers as soon as possible.

PETALING JAYA: An unexpected electrical fault at the Bukit Dumbar reservoir and pump house complex in George Town, Penang, disrupted water supply to approximately 69,000 consumers in the Barat Daya district today.

The Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) said 26 areas were affected by the incident, including Bayan Baru, Bayan Lepas, Bukit Gambir and Bukit Gelugor.

In a statement, PBAPP CEO K Pathmanathan apologised for any inconvenience caused by the disruption and said PBAPP was working hard to swiftly restore full water supply to the affected consumers.

Pathmanathan said water supply had been restored for approximately 40,000 customers, or 58% of those affected, by 1pm.

“The failure of an 11kV medium voltage drive caused the Bukit Dumbar 2 pump house to suddenly stop at 4am today, hindering PBAPP from pumping treated water from the Sungai Dua water treatment plant to Barat Daya consumers from Gelugor to Bukit Penara in Balik Pulau,” he said.

“We resumed operations at around 6.30am after restoring the electrical system with the assistance of TNB and electrical contractors.”

He urged consumers experiencing supply issues after 5pm to contact PBAPP’s 24-hour call centre at 04-2558255 for assistance. - FMT
