JOHOR BAHRU: A male teacher at a religious school has been reassigned after being accused of assaulting a group of pupils who allegedly caught him smoking.
The teacher will be placed at the district Islamic education office pending investigation while the affected pupils have been placed on leave, said state executive councillor Fared Khalid.
“The state government is treating the case seriously and a police report has already been filed,” said Fared, who handles the Islamic religious affairs portfolio.
“I urge everyone to respect the investigation process and the subsequent actions, including any disciplinary measures that may be taken,” he said in a Facebook post today.
The 48-year-old teacher was reported to have assaulted the pupils after they allegedly caught him smoking in a storeroom last Wednesday. He was said to have slapped, hit and attempted to strangle a Year 4 pupil and three Year 5 students.
Dissatisfied with the teacher’s actions, the parents of the pupils involved lodged a report at the Ayer Baloi police station. - FMT
