Apad: No subsidy or financial aid for bus-on-demand services

The Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) has clarified that it does not subsidise or financially assist any companies that participate in the proof of concept of the bus on demand (BOD) service under the Selangor demand-responsive transport service (DRT).

The agency also said it does not set fare charges by the companies involved in the project.

“It is emphasised that as the implementing agency that monitors the implementation of the BOD proof of concept, Apad is not involved in providing any subsidy or financial assistance to any company that participates in the POC BOD initiative, nor does it set the fares charged by the company.

“Apad is also not involved in any initiative carried out by any other party involving BOD or DRT transport services,” it said in a statement today.

Apad highlighted that the BOD is a form of DRT which is conceptually operated by reservation through an application and does not have a fixed trip schedule and route but is limited to Apad-approved zones only.

“Usually, the type of bus used is small, such as minibuses, coasters or vans.

“This BOD has been implemented for two years since Sept 1, 2022, as a proof of concept and will end on Aug 31, 2024.

“Based on statistics on the use of the proof of concept BOD services for this year, a total of 39,621 users have taken advantage of this service from January 2024 to April 2024,” said Apad.

It said that as of May 31, 2024, as many as three companies have been approved to carry out proof of concept BOD services implemented by Apad, namely Kumpool Sdn Bhd, Asia Mobility Technologies Sdn Bhd (Asia Mobiliti) and Badan Bus Sdn Bhd.

“It was explained that these three companies have met 15 general conditions, including eligibility and operating conditions,” added Apad.

Recently, controversy arose surrounding Asia Mobiliti, a firm co-owned by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh’s husband, Ramachandran Muniandy.

Asia Mobiliti, whose other co-founder is director and former Malaysiakini CEO Pramesh Chandran, said everything was done above board and it is considering legal action against those casting aspersions about the appointment process.

Meanwhile, Apad said people who want to get more information related to the implementation of this initiative and the list of general conditions, as well as other related requirements, may refer to its official portal. - Mkini
