McDonald’s Malaysia has decried acts of vandalism targeting its assets such as signboards, billboards and numerous restaurants across the country.
According to its managing director and local operating partner Azmir Jaafar, such actions caused significant harm and distress to its crew members as well as the surrounding community.
“In addition to the vandalism, any acts of aggression towards our crew members and customers are deeply troubling and we appeal to the public to refrain from actions that damage property.
“We are all part of the Malaysian family and such behaviour is hurtful and counterproductive. The safety of our employees, all of whom are our fellow Malaysians, is our utmost priority,” Bernama reported him as saying.
On April 19, several Starbucks and McDonald’s premises in Tawau, Sabah got vandalised, according to Harian Express.
On April 24, A McDonald’s billboard in Sungai Petani, Kedah, was also vandalised by proponents of a boycott campaign against Israel-linked entities.
The signboard - announcing an upcoming McDonald’s drive-thru facility at the district - was found spray-painted with the words “Boikot Pembunuh” (boycott murderers) and “Darah Palestin di tangan kamu” ( you have Palestinian blood in your hands).
It should be noted that McDonald's in Malaysia is owned by a Saudi Arabian corporation.
Lamenting the incidents, Azmir said vandalism and aggression do not foster constructive dialogue or resolution and only contribute to a more dire situation.
“Let’s work together towards solutions based on our shared values,” he said, urging all Malaysians to express their views responsibly.
Backing the Palestinian cause
On that note, McDonald’s Malaysia has donated RM1 million to the Palestinian Humanitarian Fund.
Stressing the local chapter is 100 percent Muslim-owned, Azmir said the establishment has always voiced its support for the plight of the victims in Palestine.
He also highlighted the collective effort of its employees who raised over RM100,000 in donations to provide further assistance.
“We do what we can, and I encourage everyone to do the same.
“As a fellow Muslim, I share the pain and despair over what’s happening in Gaza. I stand in solidarity with my Muslim brethren in Gaza and around the world. We all feel a moral obligation to help within our means.
“Standing up for the plight of Palestinians in Gaza is important, but it should not come at the expense of harming fellow Malaysians,” he added. - Mkini
