Putrajaya police have acted on a bomb threat at the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry building here and discovered an object that “closely resembled a bomb”.
Putrajaya district police chief A Asmadi Abdul Aziz said the bomb destruction unit acted on an initial report received at 3.21pm, and concluded their checks around three hours later.
“We just concluded (checks) on an object that can be categorised as a ‘hoax’ or something that closely resembled a bomb.
“There is a PVC ‘stick’ and a timer. Actions were taken… we found it to be a hoax,” he said.
Asmadi said the “bomb-like” object was discovered in a parcel delivered by a courier to the ministry at about 11am, addressed to Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Tiong King Sing, and brought up to his office at level 14.
He said a CCTV recording showed that the parcel was delivered by a courier from a Sungai Buloh hub at 11.19am, and the man was seen “shaking the parcel”.
”I also received a call from the minister, about the parcel.
”When the parcel was opened, the PVC pipe and wire were found. This led us to initially believe it was a bomb,” he said.
Asmadi said the bomb destruction unit had dispatched sniffer dogs to the scene as well as used their technology to confirm the object only closely resembled a bomb.
He added the case is being investigated under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957.
Earlier, it was reported an instruction was issued for ministry staffers to evacuate the building upon detection of the threat. - Mkini
