'Political character assassination': Hamzah pans charge against son

Opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin has described the prosecution of his son for bribery in a Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court today as an alleged “political character assassination” that targeted him.

Hamzah claimed that the charge against his son was filed after failed efforts by the Pakatan Harapan-BN government to manipulate various government agencies and create a false narrative, including by pressing “political charges” against him and other Bersatu leaders.

“After all the efforts of the Harapan-BN government led by Anwar Ibrahim to use various government agencies to create narratives, perceptions and fabricate political accusations against Bersatu leaders including myself have failed.

“This is an outdated tactic that exposes the Harapan-BN government in their desperate efforts to silence critics by targeting Perikatan Nasional leaders and their family members,” said the Bersatu secretary-general in a media statement.

Earlier, Malaysiakini reported that Hamzah’s son, Muhammad Faisal Hamzah, was charged in the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court on a charge of accepting a bribe worth RM100,000.

Faisal pleaded not guilty to receiving money from Izmir Abd Hamid, allegedly as payment for Heitech Padu Bhd (Heitech Padu) to appoint Syarikat Rimba Merpati Sdn Bhd and Syarikat Per My Solutions as marketing consultants.

‘Truth will prevail’

The alleged offence was linked to Heitech Padu which is said to have been awarded a RM33 million tender by the Malaysian Companies Commission for the supply, rental, implementation, training, support and maintenance of security infrastructure.

The 40-year-old is alleged to have committed the offence in an office at Publika Shopping Gallery located at Jalan Dutamas 1, Kuala Lumpur in March 2018.

If convicted under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009, he can be imprisoned for up to 20 years, fined five times the value of the bribe, or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

The court then allowed Faisal to be released on bail of RM25,000 with one surety.

The court also ordered him to surrender his passport to the court pending the resolution of the case.

Judge Rozina Ayob then fixed July 5 for the mention of the case.

Hamzah, who is also a Larut MP, expressed confidence that the truth will prevail.

“I believe that in the end, the truth will overcome falsehood and tyranny,” he said. - Mkini
