Those with doubts over an ongoing police probe can report it to the Independent Police Conduct Commission (IPCC), said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Azalina Othman Said.
Azalina was responding to reports that Bukit Aman will investigate all aspects surrounding the case of a disabled man allegedly assaulted by Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim’s escort.
"For a country like Malaysia that upholds the sovereignty of the law, nobody is above the law and the law provides that a person is innocent until proven guilty.
"However, for parties with doubts on an ongoing investigation, they can complain to the IPCC that was set up as an alternative move in line with the government's commitment to protect the public's rights, particularly vulnerable groups," she said on X.
The Pengerang MP also expressed gratitude to Tunku Ismail who on Friday not only urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation but also stressed he does not condone any illegal action or intimidation.
Yesterday, lawyer N Surendran said authorities are investigating allegations that Ong Ing Keong, a hearing-impaired e-hailing driver, had inked three other reports prepared by the police in relation to an alleged assault on him.
This was on top of the 46-year-old's first report lodged after the incident on May 28.
PKR Youth and Muda separately argued that questions surrounding ongoing investigations based on Ong’s police report show the need for the government to revert to Pakatan Harapan's original proposal for an Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC).
The BN-led Ismail Sabri Yaakob administration passed the IPCC Act 2020 in July 2022, which critics widely viewed as a toothless replacement for the IPCMC Bill that Harapan mooted in 2019. - Mkini
