Umno supreme council member Abdul Rahman Dahlan has dismissed claims of ongoing discussions to remove MCA from the BN coalition.
Rahman clarified that no party, including MCA’s longtime political rival and coalition government ally, DAP, had made such a request.
“As a founding member of BN, I see no reason to remove the party from the coalition.
“As far as I know, there have been no discussions within Umno about MCA’s removal. So, I am unsure how this has become an issue,” he said, as quoted by Sinar Harian today.
A few days ago, MCA president Wee Ka Siong claimed that “outsiders” had suggested Umno expel MCA from BN and that the party was now “waiting” for Umno’s decision.
While not naming anyone, the Ayer Hitam MP alleged that the same individuals had previously accused MCA of betraying the Chinese community due to its ties with Umno.
The Sabah Umno deputy chairperson further stressed that the roles of MCA and DAP in championing the rights and welfare of the Chinese community are crucial in determining support.
“We understand that there is competition between MCA and DAP in gaining the support of the Chinese community.
“However, I believe that any party with clear policies for the development and interests of the Chinese community will certainly receive their support,” he remarked. - Mkini
