PAPAR: A tour agent was arrested after attacking his acquaintance with a machete at the Kampung Kawang River Jetty, Beringgis, last Wednesday.
The 33-year-old suspect was apprehended around 4pm yesterday by a team from the Papar district police criminal investigation department, assisted by officers from the Kota Kinabalu district police criminal investigation department.
Papar district police chief, Superintendent Kamaruddin Ambo Sakka, said that preliminary investigations suggest the incident stemmed from a dispute between the suspect and the victim.
"The two individuals are acquaintances and work as tour agents for different companies.
"The conflict arose when the suspect's company offered lower-priced packages to Korean tourists compared to the victim's company.
"As a result, most Korean tourists opted for the suspect's company over the victim's, leading to dissatisfaction on the victim's part. The victim confronted the suspect, which escalated into an argument," he said when contacted today.
Kamaruddin added that during the confrontation, the suspect suddenly retrieved a machete from his car and struck the victim.
"The victim sustained injuries to his left ear and left hand, while the suspect fled the scene.
"The bloodied victim was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu for treatment.
"As of now, the victim is reported to be in stable condition and remains under medical care," he said. - NST
