KUALA LUMPUR: About 928,000 commuters used the LRT, MRT, and KTM Komuter daily on average last year.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said this marked a 25 per cent increase compared to the 741,000 passengers in 2023 for Prasarana Malaysia Bhd's rail lines.
He attributed the increase to the improved train frequency last year.
"In 2024, Prasarana successfully met its train frequency targets, with the LRT Kelana Jaya Line operating every 2.9 minutes with 59 trains during peak hours, and the MRT Kajang Line operating every four minutes with 39 trains during peak hours," he said.
"This achievement has contributed to an increase in the average number of daily passengers using Prasarana-operated trains to 928,000 in 2024, compared to 741,000 passengers in 2023, marking a 25 per cent increase," he said in a written parliamentary reply.
Loke said Prasarana has also successfully improved the performance of the Mean Kilometre Before Failure (MKBF), a key benchmark in measuring rail service reliability, from 160,000 kilometres in 2023 to 330,000 kilometres in 2024.
Additionally, he said the number of service disruptions (trains not moving for more than five minutes) had been reduced from 118 recorded incidents in 2023 to 71 in 2024.
"Prasarana aims to achieve an MKBF of 1 million kilometres by the second quarter of 2026 by minimising train breakdowns," he said.
He was responding to a question from Lim Guan Eng (PH-Bagan), who asked about performance achievements in improving the quality of services for the MRT and LRT transportation modes, particularly the MRT Kajang and LRT Kelana Jaya lines, as well as plans and the costs involved.
To further enhance train service quality, Loke said Prasarana has planned several initiatives, including increasing rolling stock and upgrading and maintaining key components.
Some of these include the procurement of 27 new KLAV27 four-car train sets for the LRT Kelana Jaya Line at a cost of RM1.8 billion, the refurbishment of three four-car train sets for the KL Monorail for RM56.3 million, and an Intermediate Overhaul of 50 four-car train sets for the LRT Ampang Line at RM176.2 million.
This also includes upgrading the radio communication system for the LRT Kelana Jaya Line at a cost of RM130 million and the signalling system at RM150 million. - NST
