PARLIAMENT | Dewan Rakyat speaker Johari Abdul has barred MPs from speaking about the royal addendum issue.
He also ruled that MPs cannot use the word “derhaka” (insolence) in the august house.
Earlier, the Dewan Rakyat erupted after Opposition Leader Hamzah Zainudin (PN-Larut) raised the royal addendum issue and alleged there was insolence against the monarchs.
Following a shouting match, Johari made the ruling after RSN Rayer (Harapan-Jelutong) invoked Standing Order 36(2) and questioned the opposition MP’s conduct.
“We can shout about it (royal addendum and insolence against royalty) but the opposition leader alleged it (the addendum) was kept hidden.
“I think that’s enough, let’s move forward. There are other issues (to be debated) and this is my ruling.
“As per 36(2) (of the Standing Order), the issue is still in court.
“And using Standing Order 36(7), I will no longer allow the matter to be debated, which includes banning the word ‘derhaka’.
“Move forward. If anyone raises the matter again, action will be taken,” Johari stated.
‘Govt hiding things’
During the debate, Hamzah accused the government of hiding the addendum and urged for action to be taken against those who had defied the royal decree.
The former home minister also alleged that the government’s action had obstructed justice.
“If the Madani government can hide such things, I won’t be surprised if they are hiding other things too,” he said.
Hamzah’s remarks prompted rebukes from several backbenchers such as Taufiq Johari (Harapan-Sungai Petani), Howard Lee Chuan How (Harapan-Ipoh Timor), Tan Kar Hing (Harapan-Gopeng), and S Kesavan (Harapan-Sungai Siput).
Rayer then invoked Standing Order 36(2) which bars the august house from debating ongoing court cases.
“The speaker has warned the opposition leader. Any further mentions of the addendum would only result in us going against the standing order,” he added. - Mkini
