PETALING JAYA
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested six individuals, including a civil engineer and three company owners, suspected of bribing officials to secure all projects awarded by two government departments in Sarawak.

According to a source from the MACC, the suspects, aged between 40 and 70, were arrested between 7am and 12pm today at several locations across Sarawak.

“Preliminary investigations found that the suspects have been bribing officials since 2006, with contractors involved allowing their licences to be used by others in exchange for a 10% commission on project value.

“At the same time, the civil engineer is believed to have received payments in return for securing projects for the companies,” the source said.

During the operation, MACC seized a Proton X70, approximately RM450,000 in cash, and various pieces of jewellery.

When contacted, MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya confirmed the arrests. He said the case was being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.

He added that all the suspects would be brought to the magistrates’ court in Miri, Sibu and Kuching tomorrow for remand applications. - FMT
