PETALING JAYA:
A crash involving an immigration department Black Maria truck at an intersection in downtown Kuala Lumpur early this morning killed three family members who were pedestrians at the scene of the accident.

Kuala Lumpur traffic investigation and enforcement department chief Zamzuri Isa said the incident occurred around 1am at the Maju Junction traffic light on Jalan Sultan Ismail, as the immigration truck was heading to the Chow Kit area for an operation to detain undocumented migrants.

In a statement, Zamzuri said the truck, driven by a 43-year-old immigration officer, had its beacon and siren on as it entered the intersection while the traffic light in its direction was red.

“At the same time, a Proton Saga driven by a 50-year-old man was going straight through the junction, when the traffic light in his direction was green. He failed to avoid the truck and crashed into it.

“The truck lost control and skidded before crashing into four pedestrians, all of whom were family members, as well as another vehicle driven by a 38-year-old man, which was stopped at the intersection,” he said.

Zamzuri said three victims died at the scene: the father, who was 53, and his daughters, aged 25 and 12. The man’s wife, 55, is undergoing treatment at Hospital Kuala Lumpur for various bodily and head injuries.

None of the drivers involved suffered any injuries.

The drivers of the immigration truck and the Proton Saga were arrested to assist in investigations. Both passed breathalyser and urine tests, Zamzuri said.

The case is being probed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act for causing death by reckless driving. - FMT
