Indelible ink: AG waiting for EC's draft amendment

The Attorney-General’s Chambers is still waiting for the Election Commission (EC) to present a draft amendment on the use of indelible ink in the coming general election.

Attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail said, once the EC came up with the draft, it would discuss the matter with the chambers.

He was speaking to reporters after the signing of the ‘Treaty on Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters’ between Malaysia and the United Kingdom in Kuala Lumpur today.

On Dec 3, the EC confirmed the use of indelible ink in the coming 13th general election, following a requisition by the parliamentary select committee (PSC) on electoral reforms.

Subsequently, EC deputy chairperson Wan Ahmad Wan Omar said a slight amendment would be made to the Election (Conduct of Elections) Regulations 1981.

Meanwhile, on the resignation of solicitor-general II Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden, who represented the public prosecutor and the AG in the Anwar Ibrahim sodomy trial, Abdul Ghani declined comment, except to say that he was his good friend.

Nonetheless, he said, the Judicial Legal Service Commission had decided on a candidate to replace Mohd Yusof.

According to sources, Mohd Yusof, 56, had handed in his resignation letter thrice. It was accepted on the third time.

He is the third most senior official in the AG’s Chambers after Abdul Gani and solicitor-general Idrus Harun.
