PKR strategic director Rafizi Ramli has poured scorn on the announcement by prime minister-cum-Finance minister Najib Razak during the recently tabled Budget that youths who earn less than RM3000 a month will get RM200 rebate for purchase of smartphone.
“If one wants to enjoy the RM200 rebate, he will need to fork out RM800 from his own pocket for the smartphone. So, the seller will get RM800,” Rafizi said, based on the average price of RM1,000 for a smartphone.
As such, Rafizi, who described the move as insulting the people's intelligence, said it only benefited the appointed retailers where the smartphone must be purchased in order to enjoy a rebate.
Najib, in announcing the one-off package worth RM300 million, said it would benefit 1.5 million youths aged 21 to 30.
But Rafizi criticised the rules under the rebate scheme, one of which compels the user to sign up for internet package.
“It also means that you no longer can sign-up as pre-paid user to subscribe to the internet package if you want to get the rebate, and this means escalating cost,” he added.
“This is Najib's stupid economics. Does he not understand, or think?"
