Day of flying mikes, missing ballots, confused voters

Flying microphones, missing ballot papers, and confused delegates; a day after the Umno party elections yesterday, these were among the numerous issues in the election that surfaced in today's dailies.
This was the first time Umno had used the electoral college system where members can elect the party's top leadership at divisional level.
According to Sinar Harian, a Women's Wing delegate of the Gua Musang division voiced her grouses about the nomination process on Sept 21 and pinned the blame on the divisional leadership.

Another woman then reportedly stepped up to snatch the microphone from her and threw it on the floor.

The situation however returned to normal when others persuaded them to calm down and Rela personnel intervened.

The report also quotes the Gua Musang divisional election chief Muhammad Shukri Abd Aziz saying that the dispute should not arise because the party headquarters, not the division, had rejected 21 nomination papers from the division because it was a minute late from the 5pm closing time.

Meanwhile The Star reported that delegates were confused by the simultaneous central and divisional elections under Umno's new electoral system.

It quoted the Umno Youth chief candidate Akhramsyah Sanusi saying that the voting in Langkawi had to be stopped mid-way when the election committee members realised that the delegates were marking the wrong ballot papers.

"There was an additional briefing session before voting was resumed," he said.

NONEKedah Umno chief and Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir (left) said the confusion was due to the identical colours of the different ballot papers and the new electoral system.

"The confusion started when the delegates focused on the huge ballot paper, but when they wanted to put in into the (ballot) box, only then did they realise there were separate boxes for the top central and divisional positions," he was quoted as saying in Sinar Harian.

The ballot papers are approximately A3-sized.

Other issues highlighted in the two dailies include:

1. Voting for the Baling Division's Women's Wing was postponed for two hours due to missing ballot papers, while in Sabak Bernam, Puteri Umno delegates faced with a similar situation, resorted to using booklets listing the names of candidates instead as ballot papers.

2. The election for the Youth Wing in Merbok and Women's Wing in Petaling Jaya Selatan had received more votes than there were delegates.

3. Umno Youth delegates in Tampin called for a recount of delegates in favour of endorsing the division's list of 10 delegates who would vote at the Supreme Council election on Oct 17. The 99 delegates walked out of the assembly for about 25 minutes when this was turned down.

Umno executive secretary Abdul Rauf Yusof pledged that he would look into issues raised throughout the electoral process.

"After that we will refer to the Umno legal advisor and give our feedback," he was quoted in Sinar Harian today.
