Zuraida: Is Umno Wanita okaying more scandals?

PKR Wanita chief Zuraida Kamaruddin has questioned her counterparts in Wanita Umno on what signal they were planning to send when yesterday they returned their chief, whose husband is being charged for criminal breach of trust, for a second term.

"What sort of messages is Umno sending to the rakyat - that it is all right for a person associated with scandals to be an office-bearer and to be a national leader?" she said in a press statement today.

Incumbent Umno Wanita chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil succeeded in defending her position in a convincing victory yesterday after receiving majority votes from the 191 party divisions.

NONEShahrizat had said that she hoped her comeback from what months ago seemed like an end to her political career would be an inspiration to other women when they felt hopeless.

However, Zuraida (right) poured scorn on this, describing it as "bizarre".

"Shahrizat said that she developed ‘inner-strength' during the last two years due to the National Feedlot Corporation (NFC) tragedy.

"It is imperative that I question her if that ‘inner-strength' means that we should be expecting more unaccounted and family-related fund mismanagement in the future?" she said.
Cleared by MACC
Shahrizat had been cleared by the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) of any involvement in the NFC.

However Zuraida said that it was perplexing that as a wife, Shahrizat was unaware of her family's activities in NFC.

"If this rot is allowed to continue, our country's coffers will be plundered further without regards to our children's future," she said.

Following the release of the Auditor-General's report in 2011, the spotlight fell on the National Feedlot Centre project which was run by the NFC, owned by Shahrizat's family.

It was later revealed that NFC was plagued by mismanagement and that her husband, Mohamad Salleh, had allegedly used a government loan intended for the project for other purposes including purchasing luxury properties and land.

The NFC saga had a negative impact on Shahrizat's political career as she lost her position as a cabinet minister after a senatorship was not renewed, amid intense public pressure.

Mohamad had since been charged with criminal breach of trust.
