ROS plea to MCA: Show compassion for Liow

The Registrar of Societies (ROS) has weighed into tomorrow's Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) showdown between MCA president Chua Soi Lek and his deputy Liow Tiong Lai asking that a resolution to censure the latter be excluded from the agenda.

NONEAccording to a New Straits Times report today, the ROS had on Thursday issued a letter to Chua (left)asking that resolution be dropped to avoid its worsening leadership crisis.

"The letter was written by ROS director-general Mohammad Razin Abdullah, in which he expressed concern over the ongoing tiff between Dr Chua and Liow," its principal senior assistant director Desmond Das was quoted as saying.

Das added that the letter had suggested that MCA refer Liow to its disciplinary committee if it wanted action instead of putting him on trial at an EGM.

"The MCA constitution contains provisions that enable the party to take disciplinary action against any member who fails to carry out his duties.

"The plan to censure Liow should be shelved for the sake of preserving MCA's unity," he was quoted as saying.

Merely advice, says ROS

However, Das said this was merely advice and indications were that Chua is turning his back on the ROS.

MCA secretary general Kong Cho Har when asked by Malaysiakini yesterday, said he was unaware of such a letter.

Chua wants Liow to be censured for allegedly refusing to heed the central committee's decision and supposed failure as general election preparation chief.

The censure bid is a power play ahead of December's party election. A successful censure of Liow may dampen his chances for the presidency.

Among the other resolutions at the EGM include reversing a ruling barring MCA members from taking up posts in the government following the party's poor performance at the general election.
