"Very positive comment from them. It is indeed," Zahid said with a grin, when asked by reporters if the budget tabled today was aimed at winning the Sarawak elections due early next year.
PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali earlier said that the budget tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was clearly an attempt by Barisan Nasional (BN) to win the elections.
His view was echoed by DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, who said the increased benefits for Sabah and Sarawak were "not surprising" given that Sarawak would be holding state elections soon.
Putrajaya today allocated RM29.2 billion for development in Sabah and Sarawak, covering a range of benefits.
These included subsidies for hill paddy fertiliser to increase food supply and the incomes of hill paddy farmers, and interest-free loans up to a maximum of RM50,000 from Bank Simpanan Nasional for indigenous tribespeople to build longhouses.
The 1,090km Pan-Borneo highway, to be completed by 2021, will also be toll-free, Najib had announced today.
Economy-class domestic flights on rural air services will also remain exempted from the goods and services tax (GST), since these flights were the primary means of transportation in the interior areas.
Najib also announced more mobile 1Malaysia clinics for the Sabah and Sarawak interiors, as well as more money for native customary rights projects including mapping ancestral lands and building native courts to the tune of RM115 million.
Another RM260 million will be spent on standardising prices of goods in Sabah and Sarawak under the 1Harga1Sarawak and 1Harga1Sabah programme.
Ruling out state elections for Sarawak this year, Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem had previously said he would wait to see what the budget had in store for Malaysia's largest state.
Adenan had said people in Sarawak, particularly in rural areas, were more interested in bread and butter issues and not so keen on political and financial controversies, such as 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
“They want the basic infrastructure – roads, water and electricity.
“They don't care much for issues like scandals or human rights. To live a better life is more important to them," he had said.
The mandate of the state government ends in mid-June next year.
