Don't be cowed by fear, MACC adviser tells AG

Attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali must not let fear stop him from ordering a prosecution, an Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) adviser said today.
"The AG must not be fearful of the power nor position of any individual.
"While he may suffer the same fate as his predecessor Abdul Gani Patail if he were to prosecute, he has the support of the public and more importantly, he will be upholding his oath of office," MACC operations review panel member Lim Chee Wee told Malaysiakini via email.
Lim added that the support of Malaysians is worth more than the support of "one individual".
Apandi declared on Tuesday that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak would not be charged with any offence on the SRC International or RM2.6 billion cases.
Apandi's predecessor, Gani (photo), was removed as attorney-general last July, while heading a joint taskforce investigating the cases involving the flow of money into the prime minister's personal bank accounts.
Gani was removed on the grounds of health reasons, but it ignited speculation that he was being replaced in order to impede investigations, a charge that the government denied.
Najib has repeatedly denied having abused public funds for personal gain or committing wrongdoings.
The prime minister blamed such accusations on those attempting to topple him from power.
Besides clearing Najib of criminal offences, Apandi also ordered a halt to the MACC's investigations.
However, Lim said the AG had no right to do this, as his job is to prosecute, not investigate.
The former Malaysian Bar president then called on Apandi to explain why he dropped the charges, as well as why he had not let the MACC get access to overseas bank accounts related to the RM2.6 billion donation. -mkini
