Muslims get hysterical over ‘ridiculous things’, says Marina

Marina Mahathir says Muslims treat their faith as a delicate thing vulnerable to the "infidel" breeze.

PETALING JAYA: Marina Mahathir has said she cannot understand why Malaysian Muslims were not ashamed to admit their faith was weak and in need of constant protection.

The daughter of the nation’s longest serving premier, in a blog post, cited several “ridiculous things” that she said Muslims got hysterical over, including the supposed pig DNA in chocolate and crucifix-like designs on the roofs of houses.

“Our faith is a delicate thing, which we hang on to by the thinnest wisp of a thread, vulnerable to whatever ‘infidel’ breeze might blow our way,” she wrote, declaring that despite studying in a Convent school, along with other Muslims for 12 years, she and her classmates had not left their faith.

Logic, she also lamented, was not the community’s strong point either.

She alluded to a video where a uniformed man who was briefing academics about spotting terrorists, named the progressive people in the country as those most dangerous.Marina opined that illogicality and nonsense were deliberate.

“Our people tend to look up to those in authority so perhaps when they say that black is now actually white, and good is now bad, we will simply believe it.”

That approach, however she said, assumed that Malaysians were mildly intelligent and had shaky values to begin with.

“Maybe ultimately that’s the only thing about how we are governed that makes sense.”

Earlier Marina lamented that common sense in the country had been taking a back seat over the last few years.
