NGO wants 'racist UM lecturer' sacked

Universiti Malaya (UM) must immediately terminate the lecturer accused of making racist remarks against ethnic Indian students, NGO Malaysian Indian Progressives (Mipas) said today.
Mipas said it would be insufficient to suspend or transfer her to another university or agency, for this would not send a message that such behaviour was unacceptable.
"There has been no solution to these sorts of complaints which keep recurring in schools and institutions of higher learning because no stern action has been taken.
"Lecturers must show good example and uphold principles of the Rukun Negara to inculcate tolerance and unity, not bring racism into universities," Mipas secretary-general S Barathidasan said.
UM has formed a five-member panel to investigate claims made on Facebook that a lecturer instructed ethnic Indian students to sit apart from each other, claiming Indians are prone to "copy and plagiarise assignments".
Deputy Education Minister P Kamalanathan said last Thursday that UM vice-chanchellor Amin Jalaludin assured him that the university does not condone such behaviour.
According to the Facebook posting, which has since gone viral, the lecturer allegedly said: "India, saya tak suka India duduk bersama-sama. Jangan bawa budaya Unitar kesini. India duduk sama-sama lepas itu akan tiru assignment dan plagiarise. Saya kenal India".

(Indians, I don't like Indians sitting together. Don't bring the Unitar culture here. Indians sitting together and then copying and plagiarising each others' assignments. I know Indians.)
The student alleged that the lecturer then made her change seats so she would not be sitting next to her friend and continued to insult other ethnic Indian students in the class.
The student also alleged that this was not the first time the lecturer had done so.- Mkini
