KL billboards must be in Malay, other languages as sub-text - minister

Malaysiakini

Billboards in Kuala Lumpur must use Bahasa Malaysia as its primary language, with other languages allowed as sub-text, said Federal Territories Minister Annuar Musa.
This came after a billboard that was primarily in Chinese was removed yesterday.
According to Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), the company had originally submitted a different copy of the advert that was primarily in Malay, and that this version was approved.
However, DBKL said the company then put up the Chinese version but later removed it themselves after realising their "mistake".
Commenting on the issue, Annuar yesterday said other languages were allowed on billboards but must be smaller than the Malay text.
Billboards in the capital must "empower" the Malay language, he added.
Likewise, MCA Youth vice-chief Chua Hock Kuan said he was assured by DBKL that bilingual advertisements were not a problem.
"However, Bahasa Malaysia must be the main language, to respect its status as the country's official language," he said in a statement today. - Mkini
