KUALA LUMPUR: The army has ended its operations under the Greater Klang Valley Special Task Force (GKVSTF) after 41 days of services in the Covid-19 fight.

Senior Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said the decision was made following the approval of the Health Ministry.

He said the number of fully vaccinated individuals have increased in the greater Klang Valley, and hospital capacity has now come under control with daily Covid-19 cases dwindling compared to some months ago.

"The army will continue their focus on various relevant Covid-19 operations elsewhere in the country, in accordance with the commitment I have made on Sept 2.

"This will include the setting up of the armed forces field hospitals in states that have been identified by Health Ministry. We will add more Combat Medic Vaccination Teams to assist the Health Ministry in distributing vaccines, specifically in rural areas, and we will increase the vaccine distribution capacity via drive-through methods.

"I am proud to share the involvement of the army for 41 days under the (GKVSTF), which has been effective and created a great impact. It has helped the Health Ministry in dealing with the Covid-19 situation at all hospitals in the Klang Valley, especially at the peak of the crisis," he said in a statement today.

Hishammuddin said the army deployed 1,080 personnel for various tasks at Klang Valley Covid-19 hospitals in red zones.

"There was the Oxygen Carrier Team (OSCAR) who assisted in the process of lifting, refilling and replacing 14,258 oxygen cylinders. The team was able to ensure the uninterrupted oxygen supply to patients, and this allowed health officers to focus more on their jobs.

"There was also the Rapid Resupply Team (RRT) to assist in the process of recruitment and distribution of critical medical equipment such as beds, oxygen concentrators and ventilators to all hospitals in need.

"The Body Management Team (BMT) helped manage 4,442 Covid-19 patients who died. The involvement of this team enables the handling of bodies to be expedited."

Hishamuddin also expressed gratitude to all military, Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) and Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) officers and personnel for their services, discipline and determination in helping the country battle the Covid-19 crisis.

"It was not easy carrying out each operation, but in any case, the army remains focused and utilises all its expertise and facilities to protect the nation's safety and the people's wellbeing in this challenging era of Covid-19.

"I extend my heartfelt congratulations and thanks to all 1,080 military members for their willingness to not only work, but risk their lives by staying away from their families to complete the mission, which was entrusted to them."- NST
