PETALING JAYA: The immigration department has uncovered an illegal moneylending syndicate involving Bangladeshis residing in the country.

It detained two men, including the alleged mastermind, in a 1am raid on apartments in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur, on Thursday.

The officers also seized nine Bangladeshi passports and RM50,000.

Immigration director-general Khairul Dzaimee Daud said the two Bangladeshi suspects arrested had earlier attempted to escape.

“We had to force open the door to the home and found five people inside.

“After questioning the occupants, we found the main suspect, known as ‘Ah Long Bangladesh’, had escaped by jumping into the corridor of an adjacent house,” according to a Sinar Harian report.

Khairul said the suspect was later found hiding on the third floor of an adjacent building.

“We believe the syndicate has been active since a year ago, targeting Bangladeshis residing in the nation’s capital.

“The syndicate had even set up a legitimate company to avoid detection by the authorities.”

The two suspects detained, aged 23 and 41, have been remanded for 14 days at the Semenyih immigration depot for further investigations. - FMT
