Consider easing travel restrictions for separated couples - Syed Saddiq

Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman today urged the government to empathise with the plight of spouses separated by international travel restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) co-founder said he has received numerous complaints about the hardship faced by individuals in getting passes to travel between Malaysia and other countries.

Thus, Syed Saddiq said, he had written official letters to the home minister, foreign minister, and health minister seeking their consideration on the matter.

“I received information that problems arose from the lockdowns imposed on international travels since 2020.

“Those affected include Malaysians or foreign permanent residents who want to travel out of the country to visit their spouses and children; spouses and children who wish to enter Malaysia to visit their loved ones here; and also unmarried couples whose partners live overseas.

“A travel pass and approval should be offered to these groups who have been separated for so long. The separation had left a deep psychological impact on individuals and families especially during the time of a pandemic,” he said.

Syed Saddiq also suggested that special guidelines be introduced for the group.

“They include ensuring travellers undergo the required quarantine period and periodical Covid-19 screening tests and have the spouses or parents who live here be the guarantor to ensure that their visitors follow all standard operating procedures,” he added.
