Couple face death penalty over cannabis cookies and cake

A couple, who ran a business baking and selling "cannabis-based" cookies and cakes out of their Petaling Jaya, Selangor residence, is now facing the death penalty.

Kuala Lumpur Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department chief ACP Sahar Abd Latif said police were conducting surveillance for a month and in a Sept 7 raid, searched a Honda City along Jalan Pudu in Kuala Lumpur.

A 34-year-old man was arrested in the raid along with 25 jars of cannabis cookies and 53 cannabis cakes.

Subsequently, police also raided the man's residence at PJ Midtown where he lives with his 28-year-old partner.

The second raid yielded 131 jars of cannabis cookies, 41 cannabis cakes, eight cannabis doughs, four pots of cannabis liquid, two ovens, one mixer, and other baking equipment.

The weights of the seized items were: 156 cookie jars at 43.275kg, 94 cakes at 9.625kg, 7.82kg of cannabis dough, and 31kg of cannabis liquid.

"Investigation found the syndicate's modus operandi is to obtain cannabis and process into cakes and biscuits which are then sold at RM100 per jar of cookies and RM50 for one 100g cake.

"The customers were... close contacts of the man on social media such as Instagram," Sahar said in a statement.

The man, who was remanded for six days, tested positive for cannabis while the woman, who was remanded for seven days, tested negative.

"The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and if convicted, is punishable through death by hanging.

Section 39B concerns the offence of drug trafficking. - Mkini
