Doesn't PM trust his cabinet, Saifuddin asks after Muhyiddin made NRC chair

PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has questioned the appointment of former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin as the National Recovery Council (NRC) chairperson.

He said this added an unnecessary layer of bureaucracy to national recovery efforts.

"This is because Muhyiddin would still need to table the NRC's proposals to the cabinet first.

"Doesn't Ismail Sabri trust his ministers (to handle this)?" Saifuddin (above) asked in a statement today.

He also questioned whether this move was aimed purely to ensure Ismail Sabri's political survival.

Muhyiddin's new position comes with a minister status.

Saifuddin said Muhyiddin's policies when he was prime minister had clearly failed to contain the pandemic and that the latter was responsible for the people's present suffering.

Saifuddin also questioned whether Muhyiddin would be willing to suggest spiking or improving any of his previous policies which did not work.

"Aren't former prime ministers inclined to defend their legacies, and not review it objectively?" he said.

During his time at the helm, Muhyiddin introduced the National Recovery Plan (NRP) - which would gradually re-open sectors as pandemic conditions improved based on three criteria - daily case numbers, hospital capacity, and vaccination rate.

The NRP has been panned as critics call out the inconsistent application of its criteria.

The government justified this by saying the plan was "agile".

Ismail Sabri had previously offered to make the opposition a part of the NRC.

Pakatan Harapan has yet to make a decision on the matter, but individual leaders have expressed openness to join the NRC, only if they are not treated as rubber stamps.

However, Muhyiddin's appointment may dampen efforts to get bipartisan support for the NRC. - Mkini
