Iskandar Puteri MP Lim Kit Siang has told Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin to not ‘tai-chi’ recent alarming Covid-19 death rates and brought-in-dead (BID) cases.
The DAP veteran, in a statement today, said Khairy should instead give a proper answer as to why there are high Covid-19 death rates and high BID cases in Malaysia.
His statement follows remarks made by the minister yesterday that the high number of Covid-19 deaths reported was not reflective of actual death figures that occur within 24 hours.
Speaking from a press conference at Kota Kinabalu, Khairy said he expects Klang Valley death rates to be reduced in the next two to three weeks, or as soon as they clear the backlog of reported deaths.
In the past seven days, the Klang Valley has continued to report three-digit deaths almost every day, despite the downward trend of the number of its Covid-19 cases.
In the same statement, the Iskandar Puteri MP noted that since Khairy was sworn in as health minister on Aug 30, there had been 680 BID cases in the country.
“Is Khairy saying that this is a gross understatement, and the actual situation is much higher - close to 1,000 BID? We await clarification from Khairy on the matter.
“The Covid-19 data yesterday was the best since Khairy took over, giving hope that the upsurge of Covid-19 cases and deaths could be checked, although the evidence is not conclusive,” he said.
He claimed that while neighbouring Indonesia had receded from 56,757 daily new cases in mid-July to a mere few thousand (4,413 cases) just yesterday, Malaysia experienced a year-long Covid-19 wave since the Sabah state elections last year.
“Maybe Malaysia should send representatives to Indonesia to learn from them,” said the DAP veteran. - Mkini
