Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan sees a silver lining in not being appointed to the cabinet.
He said it's actually a relief.
"It's a good thing not being in the cabinet; it's not easy being a minister during a crisis.
"I feel relieved not being in the cabinet. The line-up is impressive," he was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia.
Previously, Umno Youth had suggested that Mohamad be appointed as finance minister under the new government.
Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob had instead retained Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz as finance minister.
Mohamad said the proposal for him to be made a minister was just a suggestion from others.
He also said as Umno number two, he would continue supporting the government.
"This government must be strongly supported by the party, for the party to gain strength," he said.

Meanwhile, Mohamad also downplayed a viral video in which he implied leaving him out of cabinet was meant to kill off his political career.
"I was just being casual... the person asked me casually, so I responded casually.
"Politics is such, it is not an issue," he said.
In the video taken outside a mosque in Kuala Lumpur, a man teases Mohamad about his name "not coming up" in Ismail Sabri's list of ministers.
Mohamad responds: "That is politics. They want to kill me". - Mkini
