Najib: My son's tax settlement is 'far, far, far' less than RM13m

Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak disputed news reports claiming that his son Mohamad Nizar agreed to pay RM13.16 million in tax arrears.

In a post on Facebook, Najib explained although the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) sought RM13.16 million, the amount to be paid after reaching a settlement was a lot less.

"It was far, far, far less. It proves that the figure imposed on my son by the IRB during Pakatan Harapan's time was excessive and politically motivated.

"However, the actual figure cannot be revealed publicly because of a confidentiality clause imposed by the IRB. We will not protest if IRB wants to make it public," wrote Najib.

The IRB sought the initial amount for arrears for assessment years between 2011 and 2017. A consent order, or settlement, was negotiated with the Special Commissioner of Income Tax (SCIT) on May 27.

Normally, the IRB does not reveal to the public settlement amounts or amounts they are pursuing.

However, the amount sought from Nizar (above) was made public in a suit by the IRB to claim the monies in 2019.

The IRB has filed similar suits against Najib over tax arrears amounting to RM1.69 billion and Nizar's younger brother Mohd Nazifuddin for arrears amounting to RM37.6 million.

Nizar's stepbrother Riza Aziz was granted a discharge not amounting to acquittal for laundering US$248 million (RM1.08 billion) linked to 1MDB after agreeing to settle.

Najib is the only person in his family to have been convicted. His hearing before the SCIT is scheduled for Jan 3 next year. - Mkini
