KUALA TERENGGANU: Op Merah, a nationwide operation by the road transport department (JPJ) to nab red light offenders is under way to combat red light violations, especially among food delivery riders.

JPJ deputy director-general (planning and operations) Aedy Fadly Ramli said the department viewed the offence seriously because it involved the safety of other road users.

“The nationwide record for traffic light violations in 2019 was 22,656 cases. In 2020, the number dropped to 12,764 cases due to the movement control order (MCO).

“In Terengganu, running a red light was the second highest offence this August with 476 cases recorded,” he told reporters after reviewing Covid-19 SOP compliance at the Bitara Driving Institute near Padang Midin here today.

Under Section 79 of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987, a summon can be issued for a red light offence, which provides for a maximum compound fine of RM300 and a court fine not exceeding RM2,000.

Aedy said other offences include not wearing a seat belt or helmet, using a mobile phone not in hands-free mode while driving, overtaking at double lines, jumping the traffic queue and driving in the emergency lane.

He also advised the local authorities to install closed-circuit cameras, especially at intersections where collisions often occur, to assist the JPJ in detecting traffic light offences. - FMT
